PT-141, also called bremelanotide, is a peptide that activates melanocortin receptors in the central nervous system, pathways involved in sexual desire and arousal. Bremelanotide is FDA-approved, as a brand-name injection, only for low sexual desire in premenopausal women. Compounded PT-141 is not FDA-approved and is not the same as that product; it is prescribed off-label by licensed clinicians.
Sildenafil and tadalafil work in the body by improving blood flow. PT-141 works upstream, on brain pathways tied to desire and arousal. Some people use it when low desire is the main concern, or when PDE5 inhibitors aren't suitable. Your clinician helps decide which approach fits.
Compounded PT-141 is typically a small subcutaneous injection taken as needed, roughly 45 minutes to an hour before intimacy, following your clinician's instructions on dose and how often it can be used.
No. PT-141 can temporarily raise blood pressure, so it isn't appropriate for people with uncontrolled hypertension or certain cardiovascular conditions. A licensed clinician reviews your health history and medications before prescribing.
The most common are nausea, flushing, and headache; some people notice injection-site soreness or a temporary darkening of skin with frequent use. Tell your clinician about any reactions, and seek care right away for severe or persistent symptoms.
